About the Author
Samuel Ramos, born in Newark, New Jersey, started playing the guitar with his father at the age of 12. At the age of 15, he discovered the cuatro and began taking lessons with Norton Torres. As a high school student, he joined the school’s rondalla (an instrumental group) playing both guitar and cuatro. Samuel holds a BA in music education from Antillean Adventist University in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, with a major in classical guitar. He studied under the tutelage of Dr. Jacques Landre. In 1999, he recorded his first instrumental CD for solo guitar, Meditando en la Cruz (Meditating on the Cross). He joined the faculty of the Juan Morel Campos Performing Arts School in Ponce,as a strings instructor. He later became an assistant professor of guitar at the Inter-American University of San German, Puerto Rico. He also served as a public school music teacher for 6 years in Lajas, Puerto Rico. Samuel resides in Orlando, Florida with his wife Brenda and two sons, and currently teaches elementary music for the Orange County Public Schools of Florida.

About the Author
Chris Gibson received an honours degree in Mathematics from St Andrews University in 1963, and later the degrees of Drs Math and Dr Math from the University of Amsterdam, returning to England in 1967 to begin his 35 year mathematics career at the University of Liverpool. His interests turned towards the geometric areas, and he was a founder member of the Liverpool Singularities Group until his retirement in 2002 as Reader in Pure Mathematics, with over 60 published papers in that area. In 1974 he co-authored the significant 'Topological Stability of Smooth Mappings' (published by Springer Verlag) presenting the first detailed proof of Thom's Topological Stability Theorem. In addition to purely theoretical work in singularity theory, he jointly applied singular methods to specific questions about caustics arising in the physical sciences. His later interests lay largely in the applications to theoretical kinematics, and to problems arising in theoretical robotics. This interest gave rise to a substantial collaboration with Professor K. H. Hunt in the Universities of Monash and Melbourne, and produced a formal classification of screw systems. At the teaching level his major contribution was to pioneer the re-introduction of undergraduate geometry teaching. The practical experience of many years of undergraduate teaching was distilled into three undergraduate texts published by Cambridge University Press, now widely adopted internationally for undergraduate (and graduate) teaching.

A Great Character

This is the second book in Shona Husk's Arcane series; however, I haven't read the first book, Dark Vow, and I don't think you need to either to enjoy Dark Secrets.

This book is touted as a "Western-style fantasy". I wasn't entirely sure what to expect of that categorization. I mean, I don't particularly like Westerns. Or really, y'know, at all. Reading Deadwood (which is what comes to mind when I think of Westerns) was nothing short of painful for me. So there was trepidation. But this book seems to have taken all the best elements of Westerns and left the more annoying traits behind. You've got lawmen that are unchallenged powers, taverns full of sin, sympathetic prostitutes, demure womenfolk, codes of honor, normalized violence, and a Wild West setting. With magic. And apparently there's this whole genre of "weird Westerns" that wasn't even on my radar, which makes me wonder if I could learn to like cowboys, after all.

Something to consider. For now, I'll just focus on Shona Husk's writing because I know I at least like that. And do I, ever. When I first read the synopsis of the book, I was immediately intrigued. (The whole Western element didn't become apparent until I already had the book.) And this is one of those happy occasions when I can report that my enjoyment of the story completely met my expectations, and then some.

What I liked most was the thorough and intricate world-building. There's a complete reality presented here–‒one with its own language, customs, and social structure. The details are everywhere, yet their placement in the story is so matter-of-fact that you don't question their exoticism. Which is my favorite way to approach a fantasy setting. I appreciate the fact that the author doesn't spend too much time explaining this world; rather, she lets the descriptions and explanations unfold naturally in the course of the story.

The other strong suit at work is Haidyn. He's a very compelling protagonist and an effective narrative lens. It's impossible not to sympathize with him. Like a downtrodden prince, he has a dashing personality that just barely masks a wealth of regret and world-weariness. Moreover, his self-reproach is poignant and endearing. He's a man that's made bad choices, and he knows it. But even when life is kicking him in the teeth, he refuses to go down completely. And he never stops being a good person, no matter his circumstances.

As you may be picking up, this isn't an entirely happy book. While I wouldn't go so far as to call it dark fantasy, there's a definite edge at work that keeps things uncomfortable. It's a constant thread of fear and degeneration coursing through every character, every scene. Nothing to shy away from, mind you. Rather, it keeps the sense of urgency going strong until the very end, when everyone–‒reader included–‒feels like they can finally take a full breath.

Edgy Wild West Fantasy

First up, the cover is perfect for the story. It's told first person by the hero Haidyn. Or maybe he's a bit of an anti-hero? Either way, he has that brooding sexy look of the cover.

The story is dark, intense, but a romance. I had to read on and know how things turned out. *By romance, I mean love is motivational and there is a happy ending - I hope that's not a spoiler?

Because I'd read "Dark Vow", I knew the world of "Dark Secrets". It's an intriguing and unique world. Wild West with a fantasy edgy steampunkish vibe. The book has style.

Light on the romance, heavy on the personal growth

I’ve read six books in the past week, three of which are being released today and I now have to review. And because my procrastination likes to have real world consequences, two of those books I really wish I had more time to think about.

Dark Secrets is the first such book.

I read Dark Secrets first, partially because I liked the premise of the book, partially because I was in the mood for fantasy, but mostly because I lurve Shona Husk. If you have a chance to read her Shadowlands series, do so, because that series is off the bleedin' chain.

So going into this book I had high hopes for a quick little romance read set in a fantasy world with magic and patron gods and miscellaneous other good things.

Allow me to spare you some confusion. This book isn’t really a romance. I mean yes, the main characters actions are prompted by his love for what was basically his high school sweetheart, but that’s basically it. You get a few interactions, and his sucker punch realization that this is the woman he has always and will always love. Very little in the way of developing hearts and budding flowers.

Does this take away from the story?

Not even a little bit.

Instead you get this fascinating look at what one man who’s sold his morals to the highest bidder and what he does post sucker punch. You get to look at the workings of this flawed government system. Of its dirty officials, skewed morals, and rather err… flexible laws.

Was it the romance I wanted? No. Was it a fantastic fantasy (yes I giggled when I typed that) that I thoroughly enjoyed? Heck yes.

3.5 Stars. Mild romantic elements with heavy mind altering magic use. Fun for the whole family. If your family is okay reading about pleasure houses.

As a side note, I picked this up without reading book one in the series. There were parts where I was like “the effe…” in reference to the world and it’s magic, but not so bad that I wasn’t able to piece things together.

In 1827 six Osage people—four men and two women—traveled to Europe escorted by three Americans. Their visit was big news in France, where three short publications about the travelers appeared almost immediately. Virtually lost since the 1830s, all three accounts are gathered, translated, and annotated here for the first time in English. Among the earliest writings devoted to Osage history and culture, these works provide unique insights into Osage life and especially into European perceptions of American Indians.

William Least Heat-Moon’s introduction poignantly tells of people leaving one alien nation, the United States, to visit an even more alien culture an ocean away. In France the Osages found themselves lionized as “noble savages.” They went to the theater, rode in a hot-air balloon, and even had an audience with the king of France. Many Europeans ogled them as if they were exhibits in a freak show. As the entourage moved through Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, interest in the Osages declined. Soon they were reduced to begging in the suburbs of Paris, without the means to return home.

Translated by Heat-Moon and James K. Wallace, the three featured texts are surprisingly accurate as basic descriptions of Osage history, geography, and lifeways. The French authors, influenced by racist and sexist expectations, misinterpreted some of the behaviors they describe. But they also dismiss rumors of cannibalism among the Osages and observe that “the behavior of some whites . . . was not conducive to giving the Indians a favorable opinion of white morality.”

An Osage Journey to Europe, 1827–1839 offers scholars and general readers both a compelling story and a singular glimpse into nineteenth-century cultural exchange.

A Fine Piece of Native American Studies Scholarship

James Wallace and William Least Heat-Moon's combined efforts have made accessible to the academic community and the general public a series of obscure French documents that chronicle the trials and tribulations of a small group of the Osage tribe who travel to Europe. What begins as an engagement with European royalty ends up as a life of street poverty. The skilled translation of the documents and research into the history of the Osage and this group's experience in Europe not only provide an interesting historical account of this small group, but also U.S and European societies. The prose are complemented by beautiful, color illustrations. This work would be a valuable addition to the libraries of academics studying U.S., tribal, and European cultures as well as the libraries of others interested in the experience of post-contact Native Americans in U.S.

Scourge is my favorite villain from Warriors. To know more about is past life is great. I absolutely loved The Rise of Scourge. The drawings are correct and even if the 'manga' is small, we learn a lot about Scourge/Tiny. Scourge is not just an heartless cat who enjoys killing : He's a great leader who protects his clanmate. He wasn't lucky to have friends to help him or faith for StarClan to guide him, like Firestar. He became the best he could all alone. I love him even more now that I know how hard his life was. Thank you Erin Hunter.

Amazing Chronology

This is a great chronology of the life of Scourge, or, more accurately, his rise to power. It details how exactly he did it, as well as focusing upon his rough early life. The art is very good, and I enjoyed watching him become the cat that was feared by all. As with all Warriors manga books, it was a little short, but I believe that the art and enjoyable story line well make up for it.
